Anyone who has visited Toronto has no doubt seen the CN Tower which stands 1,815 feet (553 meters) tall and is considered an engineering wonder of the modern world. The tower functions as a telecommunication hub, while provides world-class entertainment and unique attractions as well as restaurants. Visitors travel from far and wide to admire the marvel that is the CN Tower. However, for nearly a decade the Tower was minimally lit in an effort to conserve energy while awaiting a better long-term lighting solution.
Thanks to LED sources being increasingly used in large-scale landmark projects, Color Kinetics’ LED lighting systems dynamically transformed the CN Tower.
Enhancing beauty while cutting energy and maintenance
It was only after extensive evaluation that a Color Kinetics system was chosen to visually transform the Tower’s appearance. This was because the system reduced energy consumption and maintenance requirements at the same time. The Tower now consumes less energy when fully illuminated by LED fixtures than it did when only partially illuminated by conventional sources.
“The CN Tower is widely regarded as the iconic symbol of tourism for Toronto, Ontario and Canada, and we are thrilled to further distinguish its presence against the evening skyline,” said Jack Robinson, Chief Operating Officer, CN Tower. “It was paramount for us to achieve an energy-efficient, sustainable lighting installation for Canada’s National Tower, and Color Kinetics’ LED-based system proved the ideal choice. Our landmark will have a visually striking, modern new look to serve as a beacon of tourism and of our city.”
The nuts and bolts
The project called for approximately 1,300 LED-based fixtures to be installed within the Tower’s elevator shafts, projecting light all the way up to its impressive antenna mast. Each fixture is individually programmable and can produce millions of colors and color-changing effects without the need for glass filters, colored gels, or electro-mechanical color scrollers.
The Tower will display various colors according to national events and holidays.

I have seen the LED application on the architectural contour applications. It is really amazing. But I have a doubt that, whether it puts great requirment on the design of the LED design. If using the LED Flexible Strip Light
for example, whether it will put requirement on the waterproof rating. Besides, as LED's long life expectation characteristic has contributes a lot at building contour applications. Besides, some of the LED lights have RGB color changing design which contributes to the beauty of building outside at night.
