Have you heard of it? Well I hadn’t until a few weeks ago when I started to read several articles on it in the journals I subscribe to. However it is not something new but something we just didn’t realise we had. Like many things that are making leaps from domestic low-key technology to ultra-usable, cutting-edge, life-changing technology, VLC is one of them. It is piggybacking on the huge advances in LED technology and the soon-to-be new kid on the block, OLED.
For years our televisions have been using this technology with our remote controls sending information via the little LED inside the handset to change channels or more recently to program our Sky+ boxes and alike. So what now?...
Now we are soon going to be able to have our luminaires with LED technology send wireless broadband and other information around our homes/offices and potentially outdoors spaces just through the chips inside the LEDs. The word on the street is that this technology will be pretty fast and won’t have the bandwidth issues that we currently have to deal with existing ways of supplying information to our gadgets.
So do you think this is the way of the future? Will it catch on? Would you want it?
